Coach Margetty Herwin dari iCOACH, yang akrab disapa Getty, mengatakan karier tidak akan bertumbuh lebih maju jika seseorang belum mampu mengatasi mental block dalam dirinya.

"Jika seorang karyawan ditawarkan kesempatan untuk menduduki posisi baru yang lebih menantang misalkan, lalu ia menolaknya karena zona nyaman saat ini, berarti ada mental block dalam dirinya," papar Coach Getty usai seminar bertemakan "Leadership Skills for Excellent Performance" yang diadakan Event Management Indonesia bekerjasama dengan iCOACH di Restoran Sindang Reret, Jakarta, Kamis (4/3/2010).

Menurut Coach Getty, seseorang mengalami mental block atau tidak, bisa dilihat dari caranya berpikir dan memandang masalah.

"Seseorang yang terbuka dan periang biasanya lebih mampu mengembangkan dirinya. Sedangkan seseorang yang pendiam, introvert, pendendam, menyimpan masalah lama yang sudah lewat, cenderung memiliki mental block dalam dirinya," jelas Coach Getty.

Mental block harus diperangi dalam diri orang itu sendiri. Artinya, betapa pun Anda dibantu oleh orang lain, namun bila tidak ada kesadaran dalam diri untuk menghancurkan mental block, rasanya akan percuma, kata Coach Getty.

Membuat diri sendiri lebih terbuka dan berani berkembang adalah dengan melepaskan mental block, seperti trik berikut ini:

1. Melatih komunikasi
Melatih kemampuan berkomunikasi menjadi salah satu cara yang diterapkan Coach Getty kepada mahasiswanya di Politeknik Universitas Indonesia. Sebagai dosen, Coach Getty mengaku caranya mengajak seorang individu untuk berkomunikasi mampu membangun keberanian. Dengan cara ini pula, kekhawatiran seseorang untuk berekspresi atas dirinya mulai beralih kepada pengenalan kekuatan dalam diri. Berlatih komunikasi juga berarti mengajak individu untuk berterus-terang. Dengan memiliki karakter terbuka, berani terus-terang, seseorang bisa lebih mengenal apa yang diinginkan dalam hidupnya.

2. Mengurangi beban masa lalu
Memfokuskan perhatian pada apa yang sudah terjadi di masa lalu hanya akan membuat energi terkuras. Karena, seseorang cenderung dikuasai rasa khawatir akan pengalaman tak menyenangkan di masa lalu. Ketidakmampuan melepas masa lalu kemudian menghambat seseorang untuk membangun dirinya. Akibatnya, seseorang menjadi pendendam dari pengalaman pahit yang pernah dialaminya.

3. Penerimaan atas diri dan orang lain
Kemampuan untuk menerima orang lain membantu seseorang untuk lebih terbuka. Kesulitan komunikasi juga dipengaruhi faktor ini. Seseorang akan sulit melatih komunikasi jika tidak terbuka dengan orang lain. Dengan mengakui adanya karakter yang berbeda, seseorang bisa melepaskan mental block dan membangun keberanian untuk menghadapi masalah.

4. Jujur dengan siapa pun yang dipercaya
Jika kembali kepada kemampuan komunikasi, kejujuran menjadi faktor penting.
